Hey guys, I'm working on a mapping project and I really need some help finding some specific model files. I took a long break from mapping in source after about 2009 but I've recently taken an interest again. It seemed like everything changed, SDK stopped functioning and they stopped using.gcf files. After doing some digging, I found out about Source Multi-Tool and it works great. I'm mapping in DoD:S and luckily I backed up all my textures and models from awhile back. Now here is my dilemma, I can view and use HL2 models inside hammer, but I can't physically find the files. Before I would just use GCFscape to extract the files I wanted so I had them available.
Why do I want the model files? Because I'm trying to bring them over into Unreal Editor with a plugin called HammUEr which can import source maps into UE4. Like I mentioned above, backing up all my DoD:S models and textures means I can easily import them into UE4, but not knowing where exactly the HL2 models are, I'm kind of at a loss. Like the title, I'm really looking for the original HL2.gcf file, or if someone could point me in the direction of where I could find the models in my steam directory, I would appreciate it. Are.vpk's what I need to look into?
Any help is appreciated, thank you.
Tip: When you install GCFScape make sure you associate GCF files with GCFScape so they'll open straight away. The files will be given icons if this has been done. When a GCF is opened, the program will appear like this: Clicking the little button, you can browse the folders clicking on them so they expand and show subfolders like so, then clicking on a folder will show the contents to the right: Right clicking a file will bring up a context menu from where you can extract from: Clicking this will bring up a window where you can choose your save location: Clicking OK will extract the file to your chosen location. Supported Formats In addition to GCF files, GCFScape also supports Half-Life, NCF, PAK,,, and XZP files.
Options The following options are available inside the options menu in GCFScape: Verbose Enable verbose logging (enabled by default). Disable this option to reduce log output. This can be useful when you are extracting large amounts of files and only want to be informed of errors. File Mapping Enable Windows file mapping (enabled by default). File mapping is an efficient method of random file access. Some operating systems have problems with file mapping (in particular Windows 98) and may produce errors; disable this option in such cases.
Quick File Mapping Map the entire file to memory (instead of pieces of it as needed). Effectively caches the file in memory. Can speed things up if you have sufficient free memory. Some operating systems have problems with file mapping (in particular Windows 98) and may produce errors; disable this option in such cases.
