Jira 6 3 For The Rest Of Us

Hi all, We have a Jira 6.4 server installation and have purchased licenses for 200+ users and an upgrade to Jira Software 7.1 What would be the easiest and safest way to upgrade? My thought is taking a full backup and creating a new linux VM, then restoring the backup there (blue/green test). My one worry is that non-atlassian plugins will not come over, something we do rely on and would be a pain to rebuild in the new version.

I've done bare installs before but never a big upgrade. The easiest way is to do an in-place upgrade. Do a test upgrade.

Copy your current installation to a new VM or whatever so you can test the upgrade without messing with your live installation. This mostly entails copying your database and $JIRA_HOME.

Then shut down the 6.4 version and start up the 7.1 release (I don't think you need to do 7.0 first and can go straight to 7.1, but this is why you test it first, right?) Once you're happy that this works properly, you can try on your live installation and upgrade in place. Just make sure you have a backup of your database and $JIRA_HOME. Do a physical database dump and directory copy of this data, as well as doing a JIRA export so you have both options available to you in case of problems. I would recommend that you do a database integrity check before you attempt the upgrade, and once again after you've done the upgrade. As for plugins, you can check which plugins will have support for 7.1 by doing the upgrade check option on the plugins page. You can request an upgrade for any that don't have support for 7.1. I'd also make sure you have up to date plugins before you upgrade.

I recently did two upgrades doing an in place update and they went without a problem, but then they weren't large installs, so YMMV. The two things that got me on the 7.0 upgrade were: 1) Plugins. I ended up making a big spreadsheet in Confluence of all of our plugins, marking which ones were critical and which ones were not (like Clone & Move), and then tracking when they had a 7.0 version available. Wisin y yandel tickets. Once I had all criticals 'green' I took the plunge.

You are going to 7.1, so you shouldn't have as rough as the 7.0 upgrade was; the plugin community has absorbed the changes in 7.0 by now and the 7.1 updates should be easy. 2) You didn't mention your database type, but our backend (database) - MS-SQL did not like the upgrade, and the not-perfectness of our existing MS-SQL DB only snowballed from the upgrade. I'm trying to carve out the time to convert to PostgreSQL. I talked to Atlassian people during 2015's Summit and they highly, highly recommended going with and sticking with PostgreSQL. -Kelly • • • • •.
