I had a youngster come in for a beginner lesson last week and she had a Gibson Maestro. It was my first chance to really play one. She paid $150 bucks for it. It wouldn't stay in tune for 20 seconds! The tuners had literally about a 1/4 inch worth of play in them in either direction. What in God's name is Gibson thinking? They should be encouraging future generations of guitarists, not driving them away.I though Fender's sub-student model 'Starcaster' was the worst.

She really needs a better guitar, but she bought this one 5 months ago, so she can't return it. Makes me mad that for $150 she's having this problem.

Yamaha can sell a decent guitar for $150, why can't Gibson or Fender? It's a sad indictment of the industry when two of the most respected names in the business have openly sold out for the quick buck. By selling instruments that are untunable and unplayable, they are insuring that future generations will never learn how to play. Admin Post My first electric was an Affinity Strat pack. The guitar was playable and the build quality was ok, but I can't say much good about it other than that. The amp (Fender 15G) really didn't help. I can't imagine anything worse than that Affinity being even remotely a good guitar.

So, it doesn't surprise me that the Starcaster guitars suck. Squier make some really nice guitars for the money (I have a slightly odd Squier Strat that I picked up second hand for next to nothing, that I love), but certainly not all of their models are worth buying.

Click to expand.I agree that there was lots of junk in the 60's and 70's, but it didn't say Gibson or Fender on it. As a guitar teacher for the past 29 years, I have seen more students turned away from music by an inferior instrument than the few who stick with it and 'get tough'.

I hear what you're saying, I think it's a common misconception. I think Vince Gill is a great guitarist because his father started him out on a real guitar when he was 10.

Not an inferior, untunable POS. I guess my main gripe here is that you used to be able trust Gibson and Fender to hold at least a bear minimum of quality. My first electric was an Affinity Strat pack. The guitar was playable and the build quality was ok, but I can't say much good about it other than that. The amp (Fender 15G) really didn't help.
